Backstage at the Tonys

Downstage Dish is exhausted - physically and emotionally. The last few weeks have been quite the rollercoaster in these parts. And just in case you missed it, Act Break has all the dirt on a little ceremony called the Tonys. What a show!

SMASH - Series Finale - NBC - 2013.
If you thought the time leading up to the big awards would be quiet, with all the hopefuls acting squeaky clean, you'd be dead wrong. When the Outer Critics Circle pitted "Bombshell" against "Hit List" with an almost equal number of nominations, we started salivating, just knowing the pressure would cause a few of our favorites to act out.

Ivy Lynn, aka Marylin from "Bombshell," made the gaffe of the century when she badmouthed "Hit List" and the musical's late scribe, Kyle Bishop. An unsympathetic Hit-ster recorded the ugly moment and uploaded it - oops! Ivy's been known to crack in the spotlight before, but oy vey!

The "Hit List" team hasn't been on its best behavior, either. Michael Riedel got the scoop of the year when director Derek Wills admitted he gave Daisy Parker the role of The Diva because she slept with him. Has Wills completely imploded... or is he trying to turn over a new leaf in his own peculiar way?

Despite her sketchy path to the top of the heap, Daisy Parker nabbed her first Tony - and Wills slinked off with a statuette for Best Choreography for "Hit List." Ivy Lynn managed to hold onto enough favor to win herself Best Actress, no doubt devastating Karen Cartwright, who has to be wondering, "What if I were still Marilyn?"

Best Book of a Musical went to Kyle Bishop for "Hit List," whose award was graciously accepted by partner Jimmy Collins. "Bombshell" captured Best Score and Best Musical, capping off an epic year for the indefatigable team of Eileen Rand, Julia Houston and Tom Levitt. Somewhere uptown, Jerry Rand is experiencing a major crisis of faith.

Act Break feels vacations are in order for most, if not all, of this year's winners and losers. (Jimmy Collins has already shipped off - a spy tells us he checked into prison immediately following his glowing night at the podium. Hope someone's looking after Kyle's Tony!)

What's next for everyone else is anyone's guess, but we wouldn't be surprised to hear from an eagle-eyed tipster spotting Houston, Levitt or Cartwright stepping off a plane at LAX or taking meetings in Burbank...
